First Selection: Divergent by Veronica Roth

Welcome Shoreline students, staff and parents. Shoreline Reads is our new literacy initiative based on a "one book, one school" approach. We hope to unite our school community through discussions about great books.

Our first selected is Divergent by Veronica Roth, a post-apocalyptic novel which has been compared to The Hunger Games. The majority of our staff has already read the book and had an online discussion about it, the first part of which (based on Chapters 1-10) can be found here. Discussions about the next few sections will be posted shortly!

In the meantime, we'd like to open up this forum to any interested participants who want to discuss this book.

After you've read the book, tell us:

- What did you think of the book?
- What are you still wondering? What unanswered questions do you still have?
- Did you make any connections to other books? To your life?
- What parts really stuck with you?
- Anything else you'd like to comment on.

Please feel free to come back and respond to other comments. All comments are moderated and reviewed before they will appear online, so please keep it school appropriate!

  1. Bethany: Wow, that was an interesting book! It was really great even though there is a lot of violence in it! When I was half way through this book, I didn't know what to think of it, but now as I am finished, I realize I want more, and I really can't wait for the next book to come out in May. Unfortunately, the ending is quite sad as people die. My favorite characters are or course Beatrice and Four. And I would really like to know whether Christina and Tori survived and I hope to find out in the next book. I found this book was a lot like "Matched" and "Crossed" by Allie Condie and it does relate to " the Hunger Games" and small comparison towards "Harry Potter". I also found myself wondering which faction I would choose and I already know that I definitely wouldn't choose Dauntless or Erudite, maybe Amity. The only thing left to say is that this was a great first choice for Shoreline to read!

  2. Allison: That was an intense book! It was full of action, romance, and suspense. At first I didn't like the book, but during the end I couldn't put it down. It was defiantly a page turner. I would like to know what the characters Beatrice and Four are going to do in the next book. I'd also like to know if they get caught by their government. I defiantly say similarities with this book to the hunger games. I'm almost done all of the hunger games books, and I've liked all of them. So I'm excited to read the next book in this series. I really liked the idea of having the factions, and the characters having to choose what one they belong in. If I was put in their position, I would most likely choose Amity, but I'm drawn to dauntless as well. I also liked the characters, and their back stories. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially the people who really liked the hunger games. This book intrigued me and I'm excited for the next one. :)

  3. Tate: after the end i thought there was another Chapter after the ending. Im going to read isurgent and see how diffrent they are( probably not that diffrent) . Id have to say my favorite part was she jumped off the roof after seing the dead girls body broken on the ground. I wondre what happened to eric and jeanie and christina and the rest of the dauntless. While reading < the hunger games > kept poping into my head for some reason. Probably beacause its about relatively the same thing. Either way i thought the book was amazing and the second one will be way better. By the time i read the next book ill have probably read 2 books and will compare them to each other to see wich one is better, book vs. divergent.

    1. Mrs Moreau: The second book is out! It's called "Insurgent". I've already got it on my iPhone.

I think you should ask Ms. Speller about getting a copy for the library. ;)

  5. It was a great book but the ending was underwhelming and it reminded me of "hunger Games". I wonder when the second book is coming to the library.

    1. Mrs Moreau: I agree with you (and so did many of the teachers...(look here... https://docs.google.com/document/d/1nxapzc5UumMapA4nWC0apSBaH6Jcf9RaDYw4i4ZtrB4/edit?pli=1) about the ending. I'm hoping that it was finished up so quickly because the author was writing the second book. I heard a rumour that she wrote the story all at once, and then the publisher decided to split it into three books. That makes sense.
